The crab fly has been responsible in large part for the success of anglers catching permit, but this is also a great fly for tarpon, striped bass and a host of other fish that feed on crabs. There are hatches of small crabs many anglers are not familiar with that produce a feeding frenzy. some of these crabs, such as the calico crab along the coast of New England, really turn stripers on , and this crab is rarely larger than a penny. The key is to tie the crabs approximating the color of those in your area. in deep water, a dead drift of the pattern is best most of the time. Where fish are in the shallows and spooky, crabs made from epoxy or with a belly of hard material often create a heavy splashdown on the water. These will not be as effective as crab patterns made from softer materials like this fly.
