Description

The whistler flies were designed by west coast fisherman Dan Blanton. While they where first used for striped bass in San Francisco area waters, California fly roders took them to Casa Mar, a Costa Rican tarpon camp, where they had to fish in rather muddy waters. The flies worked very well in this environment. The large bead-chain eyes, coupled with the bulky dressing created underwater vibrations. One of the keys to this fly’s effectiveness is that it should be dressed with more materials than most streamer flies While Dan ties some flies un-weighted, most of the time he adds several turns of lead wire immediately in front of the wing. “The fly has become a standard wherever water visibility is low (soiled waters, after dark, or down deep) "I regard the whistler as one of the best all-time streamer flies”.- Lefty Kreh The bead chain eyes allow the fly to dip every time the angler pauses the retrieve this gives the fly a jig like motion on the retrieve.
